Opening day iPad pre-orders sell out
Apple Inc. quietly changed the delivery date Saturday on new pre-orders of its iPad tablet computer to April 12.
Until now, customers ordering the Wi-Fi version of the new devices were guaranteed delivery in-store or by shipment on the day they are scheduled to hit store shelves, April 3. Now the date is later in the month.
The 3G version is still listed as coming in late April on the Apple Web site.
The shift in delivery dates appears to lend some credence to speculation that initial sales of the iPad could outsell debut sales on Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone.
Barclay's Capital analyst Ben Reitzes told his firm's clients on Wednesday that Apple is on pace to sell 5 million iPads this year and 1 cash advances pay day loan.2 million in the current quarter.
An online survey conducted by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal found one third of the respondents said they expect to buy an iPad, with 9 percent saying they plan to buy one right away.
Apple, meanwhile, has been officially granted the rights to the iPad name by Fujitsu Ltd., which had previously applied for the trademark back in 2003.
